NSW Health Employees
If you are directly affected by the emergency as a result of Cyclone Alfred and/or flooding then you are entitled to:
Family and Community Service (FACS) Leave is available to nurses who:
- Are prevented from attending work due to the emergency
- Need to remain at home to protect family or property
- Must care for children due to disrupted care arrangements
When FACS leave is exhausted:
- Up to 5 additional days of special leave may be granted
- Further special leave may be approved at the discretion of management where absence is absolutely necessary
For Nurses Required to Stay at Hospital or Work Additional Shifts
- Health services are directed to apply flexible approaches to leave provisions and working arrangements
- Time in lieu or other appropriate compensation arrangements should be implemented for staff who are required to:
- Remain at hospitals beyond scheduled shifts
- Be available for additional shifts during the emergency period
- Work extended hours to maintain essential health services
For Nurses Volunteering with Emergency Services
- Unlimited paid Special Leave is available for nurses who volunteer with emergency services organisations
- Additional reasonable recovery time before returning to duty will be granted
- Proof of emergency service attendance will be required upon return
For Nurses Unable to Return Home
- Special Leave or time in lieu may be granted to nurses who cannot return home due to road closures or other emergency-related issues
- Reasonable out-of-pocket expenses may be reimbursed where appropriate
Other Members working in Private Health Facilities
- You have the legal right to refuse unsafe work, including hazardous travel conditions
- Personal leave can be accessed when caring for family during emergencies
- Check your specific enterprise agreement for disaster leave provisions
- Review workplace policies that may provide additional protections
